The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology is an interdisciplinary graduate school offering a 5-year PhD program in Science. Over half of the faculty and students are recruited from outside Japan, and all education and research is conducted entirely in English.
The OIST graduate education and research program is cross-disciplinary and aims to be at the leading edge of research in science and technology, including the Life Sciences, the Physical Sciences, and Mathematics. So far, 47 research units have been launched, with research in five major areas of Neuroscience, Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Environmental and Ecological Sciences, as well as Physics and Chemistry. As of March 1, 2014, OIST has over 360 researchers, of whom approximately 170 are international, and about 230 administrative staff who support the researchers.
OIST considers research collaboration with industries as an important component of its mission to contribute to economic development, in Okinawa and beyond. OIST Faculty Members have a strong track record of research collaborations with industrial partners and beyond one-to-one collaborative agreements with industrial partners, OIST participates in National Research Projects like JST, NEDO etc. The highly interdisciplinary community of OIST researchers offers potential for original and unconventional approaches and mutually beneficial Industry/University partnerships.
