Following the Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), which was the main instrument for funding research in Europe running from 2007 to 2013, the European Union launched the Horizon 2020 Programme.
Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.
Horizon 2020 provides financial support for transnational research for and by SMEs wishing to innovate and improve their competitiveness, by enhancing their investment in research activities to acquire new knowledge for growth in Europe's knowledge-based economy.
Horizon 2020 is open to all types and sizes of business including start-ups, spin-offs, small, medium and large companies.
Launched in September 2013, the Japan-EU Partnership in Innovation, Science and Technology (JEUPISTE) is a 3 years EU co-funded project aiming at promoting EU-Japan cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) through supports to policy dialogues, deployment of bilateral information services, organisation of networking events focusing on specific technologies and/or societal challenges, operation of help desk services and contribution to the development of human resources for collaborative projects.

Various awareness seminars and workshops are organised throughout the year in Japan and in the EU. It is a perfect opportunity to listen to researchers and managers, who participated in collaborative R&D projects, sharing with the audience their own experiences.
Some of the topics covered during the previous events:

• Energy and environment
• ICT
• Smart communities
JEUPISTE help desk is offering assistance to researchers, R&D managers and other targets in their search for information such as on Horizon 2020 and Horizon 2020 applications, other funding opportunities, information on EU and Japanese S&T policies.
