The share of Biogas in Japan’s energy mix, especially in comparison to other renewable energies such as solar energy, is still rather small. However, the biogas sector shows a steady and positive development and current policy strategies illustrate the increasing importance of biogas production in Japan.

As the Japanese electricity market is now largely liberalised, a growing number of national and local players are starting to sell “green” electricity. Especially biogas is a suitable renewable energy source to deliver a stable supply of “green” power. Therefore, bioenergy is also expected to play an important role in the future.

Also in urban areas there is a potential growth market for biogas plants as feedstock trends are shifting from the traditional livestock excreta and sewage sludge to a mix with food waste including industrial waste and food scraps.
