The production capacity of Malt in the EU represented 9,683,650 tonnes in 2017 while the exports of malt production produced in the EU reached 2,438,644 tonnes this very year. Regarding, Starch, the EU produces 10,7 million tonnes of starch each year from EU wheat, maize and potatoes.
Regarding the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, Not Roasted Malt duties will be phased out over 10 years, and be free as from 1/4/2028, while Roasted Malt is duty free as from the EIF of the Agreement within a TRQ of 185.700t. For Starch, import duties differs depending on the type of cereal (wheat, maize, potato and manioc). Concerning Wheat Gluten and Albuminoidal Substances, duty will be respectively phased out in 10 years and become zero on 1/4/2028 for the wheat gluten, and eliminated at the EIF of the Agreement for Albuminoidal Substances.
